I had the honor of speaking in NY, L.A. Seattle, and Vancouver, BC this past month. So many amazing entrepreneurs!

Digital Life in NY was first with a 4-day class selection that range from beginner’s classes to taxes to branding to sourcing and more. I was blessed with an emotional visit from a gentleman who took one of my classes at last year’s Digital Life. I was doing a book signing at the eBay booth and I see a footballer sized man walking towards the line. In his hand, there was business card of mine that I hadn’t used in a year and tears in his eyes. He gave me a huge hug, and a kiss on the cheek and said, “You may not remember me, but you changed my life.” WOW…this is exactly the reason I work this hard. How amazing of him to take the time to share this with me. He said that because of what he had learned at my class last year, he had set up his eBay business. He was now looking at the possibility of leaving his corporate job, he had been able to fight his way out of credit card debt AND he beamed as he told me that he had purchased Rangers season tickets so that he and his daughter could go to the games together. Fred, thank you so much for sharing your incredible story with me and the eBay audience that day. You are truly an inspiration to all of us that if you can dream it, then you can turn it into a reality. Keep up the amazing work!!

Fred’s store is Bubble Gum Heroes  – go check it out and send him kudos for working so hard on his dreams!

And, I must give a shout out to George in Los Angeles, who runs a 6-hour Salsa dancing boot camp, for his enthusiasm and delight in realizing how powerful an eBay store could be for his business. Check him out here: http://www.learnsalsa.com/aboutus.htm and tell him to get his eBay Store open so we can all buy dance lessons!

The shows in New York, Vancouver, BC and Seattle also included a stop on stage for Ladies Who Launch.

I was honored to be one of the speakers among incredibly talented entrepreneurs including:

Not long after, Designhergals.com was born. “The Design-her Gals brand brings out the best in us,” Jeanne explains. “It allows women to design all the facets of their lives…from promoting a business, announcing an engagement or creating invitations to their baby shower.” Her customers are one of her biggest sources of inspiration. Jeanne chats online with over 200 women each day and draws upon them to guide the site through continuous growth and evolution. As self confessed “trend junkie,” Jeanne is constantly making sure that the site is filled to the brim with the latest and most fabulous clothes and accessories. And as importantly, Jeanne is passionate about her customer service. Her virtual team (located throughout the United States) understands that without top notch customer service there is no customer. Jeanne and her team view the registered users of designhergals.com (now over 75,000 since it launched in September of 2005) are part of a family – dedicated to support and help one another and each and everyone of them demands and deserves that special “touch”. Jeanne’s largest source of passion and inspiration can be found very close to her home and heart. Having lost her cousin, Robin, to breast cancer (who was 45years old) and witnessing her best friend’s – dear friend, Janis succumb to the same fate just before Christmas of last year, Jeanne is determined to bring awareness to and raise funding for patients in Stage 4 of breast cancer. “It occurred to me that given the proper platform – the Internet – our brand could make a significant financial contribution to the resources available to Stage 4 breast cancer patients,” Jeanne explains. Jeanne is committed to joining other women in her quest. She believes that your gal pals ARE your power and when you join hands anything is possible!

Did you know…
That there are over 1.3 million of us now making our living on eBay?
That over $97,000 is transacted on the site every minute?
That over 6 million items go up for sale on eBay daily?

Is your electrical bill over $1000 during the holiday season?

Does Santa navigate on his special night by using your house as a homing beacon?

Do your children have a constant sunburn during the winter months?

Do you have to start the ‘holiday decorating’ in July just to have it finished in time for December?

Then this site is for you – SUPRTEC CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Snowflake Rope Light Sculpture

LED Blue Stars light string with multi function controller

This one is my favorite – an entire curtain of lights!

And look how beautiful these star ones are

All of these come in multiple colors and lengths and have controllers with them so you can have the lights do multiple things like fade in/out and twinkle flash.

5 tips on how to get holiday shoppers to come back and shop with you after the holidays

  1. Create a new fresh festive holiday flyer just for the holidays. Include a sale flyers with every order advertising that you are having a huge “after holidays sale”. Start adding these to your orders now & have a “expiration date” on the flyers.

  2. Over & beyond customer service is always a + at the holidays.
Add in extra goodies (Christmas candy attached to your sales flyer) in all orders. Add a simple but nice gift in each order & maybe go the extra mile & gift wrap it or the entire order. Offer free gift wrapping on certain orders or orders over a certain dollar amount. By all of this wonderful customer service you are offering, they are sure to be back for your “after Christmas” sale!

  3. Use the eBay Store Marketing email system to deliver “big sale” flyer emails to all of your customers who have signed up for your newsletters now & again right after New Years.

  4. Maybe offer free shipping & handling with certain orders over a certain dollar amount & even better, toss in a coupon with a certain percent off next purchase, maybe an offer of buy one get one, or buy one get one half price.

  5. Offer incentives for returning customers & my favorite, offer discounts for new customer “customer referrals” from your repeat buyers!

A little tip on how to get even more ideas for the upcoming holiday & after holiday sales marketing ideas.

I do this year round & it works! Watch a lot of the retailers during the holidays & their special promotions & adapt those that work for you as a shopper & go with it.

Update on My Favorite eBay Live picks

Most of you know me well enough to know that I would never recommend a product that would spin your wheels…you work too hard to spend your time ‘testing’ products. I always try out a product first before recommending that you add it to your business model. And, each year at eBay Live, I pick my top favorite companies/products to test out for you. Now Prosper is still definitely in the lead as one of my favoritest. This site is amazing as a place to borrow money for your business – or lend money to other’s. A very unique business model to say the least. (Thanks Michael for dragging me over to that booth at eBay Live).

However, there was a company that I said I would try out for a few months before reporting back to you. That was Smarty Ads. Since their business model takes a while to really see if it’s working or not, I wanted to be fair in my evaluation. Per Smarty Ads site, “you'll profit from professionally-managed ad campaigns that bring you new customers and sales.” So, after eBay Live, as you might remember, I came back and set up an ad campaign with them. This was relatively easy and took very little time….which is what I was looking for in working with this company. I know enough about Search Engine Advertising and Pay-Per-Click to have done this myself…but, as I constantly am saying, ‘automate your business’ …and was hoping that Smarty Ads could be the company to take over this piece of my business.

Long 3 months into a short story – Smarty Ads did not work. Only one sale for MY product resulted from the purchase of the keywords on Google by Smarty Ads. However, over 50 other companies benefited from the purchase of my keywords (how to shipping, hot 20). Most of the keywords chosen were too vague to produce targeted results that would have turned into sales. From the reports, I could see people coming in through the generic words purchased, then leaving my site to go and purchase from other sellers. When I asked Smarty Ads about this, here was their reply:

“If you look closely to the sales report, you would see how many new transactions (50, yes fifty) and gross sales/GMV ($1,553.45) we brought to other eBay sellers. This is our fundamental problem with eBay marketplace which is perceived by a majority of shoppers as the ‘bargain-land’ and because of this they keep shopping elsewhere to find those other deals and end up buying either from your competition or completely unrelated items.”

I completely disagree with this – there was only 1 sale that came from a bargain shopper who left my site to find the same item cheaper. All the rest were completely unrelated items. In all fairness, Smarty Ads allows you to constantly update, change and approve your keywords – but why would I pay someone to run an ad campaign if I was still doing the majority of the work?

I am sad…I was truly hoping that Smarty Ads would turn into viable solution, especially for eBay Store owners, to easily utilize advanced search engine marketing tools. Unfortunately, based only upon my personal experience, I would not be able to recommend Smarty Ads in the future.

Entrepreneur Tips

At last year’s Digital Life I had the incredible honor of meeting an amazing genius…Ahmed. A handsome man from Egypt. Not just smart (& incredibly nice), but a true genius. I was in awe of his brilliant ideas, enthusiasm, and ability to, not only easily understand technology, but more importantly how to put it to use in building a profitable business. It was a delight seeing him again this year at Digital Life and I was honored when he accepted my request to write a column about his knowledge of this fascinating new technology.

When I received his column, I started to edit it like I do the others – to give it consistency…and then I realized that I wanted you to experience Ahmed as I do – with all of his charm and excitement and intelligence – accent and all smiles. This is the first of many columns from this incredible young entrepreneur. I hope you truly appreciate, and take advantage, of the opportunity we have of the knowledge he is offering. Thank you Ahmed.

Hello Guys,

First of all I would like to take the chance to thank Janelle for giving me the opportunity to write this column in her newsletter for eBay success. I was honored when she first asked me to write it and got a bit confused of what I can share with everyone else of the huge amount of information that I have about the new online technologies and new online marketing strategies, but Janelle helped me find my way by giving me an idea of what to write about.  Even with all the reading and browsing online that I did in the past 12 years and my special interest in marketing online and ecommerce, Janelle always knew some things that I didn’t know and I learned and still learning from her.

We met at the eBay U last year on October 14th I was still fairly new as an education specialist and I learned new stuff from her, one year later and after few emails we met again at eBay U in New York City on October 13th then she surprise me to share my knowledge with you on her great newsletter.

The point is that I encourage everyone here to listen to her tips and secrets to success on eBay and you will succeed. Janelle, a big THANK YOU goes to you.

I will also like the chance to introduce myself to you:

My name is: Ahmed (Alex) and that’s what my close friends call me referring to the great city of Alexandria, Egypt of which I came from and since my name that my father gave is not easy to pronounce most of my friends in New York and New Jersey call me Alex, you guys can call me any of the 2 names or any of my online nick names (Lorddy and GuruOfSales or just Guru for short) and there is a great story behind the 2 nick names that I will share with you in the beginning of the next 2 issues.

I have started my interest in computers since 1992 (I was 14 back then, & please don’t start counting because it’s not nice) (I was kidding!), so that was 14 years ago and it was 1994 when I got my first MODEM and my first chat program (Very old version of today’s modern web based chat rooms) then in 1995 learned about Yahoo.com and then every other website that is now giant in business. Magically I found out that the key to success will be online and the key to success online is with good advertising and marketing techniques so I started studying on my own all the way to market and advertise my products online and along the way I learned about new stuff and my hunger for information lead me to get every single piece of info about any thing I wanted online, then the 2002 web bubble burst and I decided that this is what I want to do and I stumbled upon eBay, I loved the idea of equal opportunity and decided that big share of my work will be on eBay whether selling or just learning about the site, and until today I spend more than 7 hours a day on eBay just learning and browsing and about 3 hours on other sites. Up until I met Janelle and Griff at the eBay U last year I was still lost of what to do with all the information that I learned through out the years but they guided me without knowing and here I am here now.

I will not waste your valuable time about me any more but there is a more detailed bio about me on one of my websites GuruOfSales.com (Under heavy construction) that I am remodeling it or renewing it to be more easy for visitors to browse and should be back up online within a week. Or two!

So let’s get down to business.

With Janelle’s help we decided that I will write this column about the new web technologies with focusing on how to use the marketing strategies to benefit our eBay business, and I found out that the best way to do so is by visiting the new web sites that can help us in marketing our products online. Since this newsletter will be issued on a monthly basis, I will go through every website that I know of as of one site every month, and I came up with an easy way to introduce those sites to you in a form of Q&A.

Starting from the next issue we will have three main questions (sections) in this column about one specific site, some of you may already seen that site or is a member of it’s service but I will show you ways to use it to market your products.

The main three questions (sections) will be as following:

1- What is it?
This will be an introduction to the site it’s history and what kind of
service(s) or products they have on it, how successful this site is and all the info I got about it since visiting it for the first time.

2- How to use it?
This will be the part on how and where to sign up for that site if there is any sign up required and if it’s worth it to get a paid service from it if there is any (most sites I will review are 100% free), best way to browse it and how to get every possible angle on the site to be used whether it’s for just information or if it’s a service they provide.

3- How is it good for marketing?
Since the column is about new web technologies (some of you may have heard about it as: WEB 2.0) and marketing strategies, this section will be on how to employ the site to work for our marketing goals, from research to exposure to tools on the site, I will go through every possible way to use the site to help us in our marketing.

By now I guess you will be excited enough and can’t wait until the next issue to read about the sites and how we can use it, so I decided to give you a sneak preview of some of the sites that I will go through (only some of it):

  • Google.com with 6 subsites under Google that we can use for different
    marketing benefits

  • Alexa.com & more related to it.

  • MySpace.com --- Hi5.com --- Friendster.com

  • CraigsList.org

  • Blogger.com --- WordPress.com

  • RssReader.com & more related to RSS feeds.

  • Digg.com & del.icio.us

  • Flickr.com & PhotoBucket.com

  • StatCounter.com

  • And lot more to come.

Also before the ending of the column I will write 2 more things to end up
with:

1- Tip of the month.
It might be related to marketing or not, and it will be anywhere between an online new service and just a new tool (toy) that I will share with you or even just a hint to use.

2- Did you know?
This will be about something general that I just found out about and I promise it will always be fun.

This should be it aside for the last section that I will put every way you can get in touch with me for any question that you have or to add more friends (I love friends) and here it is:
Website: GuruOfSales.com for all my websites listings and my info go there.

Emails: Alex@GuruOfSales.com or GuruOfSales@hotmail.com or even Lorddy@hotmail.com and I welcome all your emails even if it’s to market your products.

Phones: (212) 444-2744 or (973) 981-2896 those are my 2 cell numbers & you can call me any time and leave a message if I can’t answer, I will get back as soon as I can.

Well That’s about it I guess for now and I can’t wait to see you next month, until then have a very happy holidays and for all the sellers happy holiday selling.

eBay Success Tip

Branding Your Business with Avatars

I just learned recently the difference between marketing and branding. I used to think they were the same thing but they’re not.

Marketing:

In a nutshell, marketing is when you communicate with customers about a product or service you want to sell. The communication usually involves a marketing plan for your product: how you price, promote and distribute the product.

Pig and Panda™ is currently running a marketing campaign titled An Exclusive Holiday Gift. This campaign is designed to show customers how much we appreciate their business by offering special sales over the next nine weeks. Each week, I get to shake my Magic Snowglobe and announce the special discounts for select products in our online stores.

Branding:

While branding and marketing often cross paths, branding your business is a whole different beast. Branding is when you increase product or company name awareness. If you’ve done a good job branding then customers immediately recognize the character of your company and purpose of your product. You’ve really nailed branding when customers associate a positive emotion with your brand resulting in a lifelong customer. On a side note, I highly recommend that you shoot for positive attributes. We’ve all seen lately what disgruntled consumers can do to a company’s branding on You Tube

Branding is also a combination of words and letters, symbols, and colors that create an image people instantly recognize. This is important because when people choose to buy something, they will pick the brand associated with an emotion. Folks now recognize the cheery eBay logo in primary colors and associate it with a friendly, safe place to shop. Customers now recognize that the dancing Pig and Panda™ and the pink and grey colors mean friendly customer service and unique and high quality arts & craft supplies, home décor and gifts. It is this emotional relationship with a brand and the potential for repeat business that makes branding so powerful.

For the past two years, we’ve been working hard to brand Pig and Panda™. It’s been a bit tricky because I named the corporation before I had a clue about branding or what I was going to sell. At first, a dancing Pig and Panda™ had very little to do with arts & craft supplies, home décor & unique gifts. But, with consistent repetition of our message and interactions, customers now turn to Pig and Panda™ when they are deciding whether to buy from us or from a competitor. Our BHAG – pronounced “bee-hag” – or Big Hairy Audacious Goal is that when people think arts & craft supplies, home décor & gifts, they don’t think JoAnn’s…they think Pig and Panda™!

Brand identity includes the following:

  • A good Brand Name gives a strong first impression, is easy to remember, and evokes positive associations with the brand. Luckily, lots of customers like and remember the name Pig and Panda™.

  • The Positioning Statement tells, in one sentence, what business you’re in, or what benefit you provide or why you’re better than the competition. Pig and Panda’s positioning statement is “Embellish Your Reality”™ because we want customers to know they can come to us and have fun decorating themselves and their environment!

  • A Category Descriptor is the "hook" you use to catch the customer’s mind. Pig and Panda’s category descriptor is that we sell unique and high quality arts & craft supplies, home décor & unique gifts.

  • Organizational Values are the standards you want to be known for. Pig and Panda™ is known for our unique products, our 100% money back guarantee and our friendly and stellar customer service.

  • Key Purchase Factors are the tangible and emotional benefits or associations that a customer experiences when they come into contact with your company and buy your products. Pig and Panda’s customers enjoy beautiful & unique products to embellish themselves and their homes. They also appreciate the respect and consideration they receive when interacting with us at Pig and Panda™.

  • Brand Archetype is your “personality” that adds emotion to the customer’s experience. The dancing Pig and Panda are one type of brand archetype that we use to convey our personality. The latest personality in our Pig and Panda™ store is “Holiday Rebecca”, a friendly avatar!

Move Over Emoticons!

Don’t embellish your online presence with dorky little smiley faces otherwise known as emoticons. Dress up with avatars! What the heck is an avatar? "Avatar" comes from the Sanskrit word Avatara, which means "descent”, the physical manifestation of an immortal being. Gaming and Internet cultures have absconded the term, using it to refer to a virtual representation of oneself. An avatar is your virtual online personality.

Pig and Panda is using an avatar, “Holiday Rebecca”, to promote An Exclusive Holiday Gift. She’s my virtual personality. Check it out and you’ll see that she’s running the show, dressing up the store for the holidays and shakin’ her Magic Snowglobe! “Holiday Rebecca” launched this past Wednesday and we’ve had an amazing response from our customers. Here are just a few of the comments:

I love Holiday Rebecca!
Holiday Rebecca is so cool!
Can Holiday Rebecca get me in to see Santa?

Smart online businesses recognize that face-to-face contact is one of the oldest and most trusted forms of communication and avatars can help fill the personal contact void. Using avatars is a great way to engage your customers and put them at ease. This is important because buyers don’t get the same personal interaction online that they do when they step into a brick and mortar store. An avatar lends a fun, personal feel to your online business, plus, you don’t have some of the drawbacks you get with a live employee like colds, bad moods or emergencies.

Pig and Panda™ has posted “Holiday Rebecca” all over the store to give the site added personality and lend a festive air for the holidays. Use one or several avatars on your site to add appeal and provide valuable information to your customers. You can find “Holiday Rebecca” on our:

In less than a week I have seen the benefit of putting a face to our online branding, messaging and promotions. “Holiday Rebecca” has a global appeal, is trustworthy and believable. You can create your own avatar and experiment with branding your business. Put a friendly face to your messages, products and interactions. Here are a few additional tips to using an avatar:

  • Avatars have a wide range of looks and feels. Some folks alter photographs of themselves, create computer characters like “Holiday Rebecca” or use an icon or other image. If you happen to be a photo phobe, you could choose something that represents your business well. For instance, if you sell collectible dolls, a troll doll avatar might be appropriate.

  • Go for an avatar that has universal appeal and is friendly. Remember, you don’t want to scare your customers, you want them to feel welcome and comfortable.

  • Change your avatar frequently so customers don’t get bored. You can bet that “Holiday Rebecca” will change clothes and her message after December 31st.

Here are some places to consider when researching the look you want for your avatar:

  • “Holiday Rebecca” was created at www.designhergals.com. Jeanne Fitzmaurice is the creator of this incredible site and has been featured on Oprah, Martha Stewart and in the Wall Street Journal this year! You simply register for free, go into a dressing room and design your gal. After your gal is created you can use her to send free emails or send her to the print shop and plaster her all over note pads, announcements, tshirts, mugs and aprons. You can also request to have an electronic version for use on your website. I love this site because it is the only National non-profit organization that dedicates 100% of their proceeds to stage four breast cancer causes.

  • Zwinky avatars are free and come with a hip, young vibe.

  • My Space offers free avatars for account holders.

  • Yahoo offers free avatars for account holders.

  • Design speaking animated characters at Oddcast. Some are very realistic while others are more illustrative. Oddcast avatars are not free

  • Put an ad on CraigsList for a designer to create an avatar appropriate for your business.

Marketing and branding are key to the success of your business. Use an avatar to strengthen your marketing efforts and build your brand. Take advantage of today’s technology and use avatars to draw customers to you. Be creative, have fun and put a face to your online presence. Who knows where avatars are headed and how they will transform online interactions. So, get a jump start and start using one now because it’s obvious that as technology becomes more sophisticated and faster, avatars are just going to keep getting more attractive, fun and important for online businesses!
