2. HTML class – Lisa Stephens of Somersault Media (www.janelleelms.com/smedia) teaches you how to make your listings and Store look more professional – making you more money.
Introduction to HTML (by Lisa Stephens)
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is made up of a series of tags. Tags occur in pairs and are surrounded in < > characters. For instance: <p> .... </p> is a paragraph tag. Any text that occurs between the start and end tags is in the paragraph.
Tag sets can be thought of as containers – they contain text and images and other tags that are treated as a group.
Tags are not case sensitive. So <p>... </p> is the same as <P>...</P>.
HTML documents are arranged in documents with the following series of tags:
<html>
<head>
<title>Page title goes here </title>
</head>
<body>
</body>
<html>
Common tags:
Paragraph <p> </p>
Line break <br>
Heading <h1> </h1> Unordered List <ul>
<li> </li>
</ul>
Ordered List <ol>
<li> </li>
</ol>
Anchor <a> </a>
Bold <strong> </strong>
Italic <em> </em> |
Links use the anchor tag together with a hypertext reference or “href”. For example:
<a href=”www.somersaultmedia.com”>This is the text that will be underlined</a>
Here we see the basic anchor tag along with the URL we want to navigate to. The href can be a document, a sound file or another web page that we want to load. The text that is between the two <a> tags will be underlined by default. We could also put an image reference inside the <a> tag to create a linked image. For instance:
<a href=”http://www.somersaultmedia.com”>
<img src=”http://www.somersaultmedia.com/mylogo.gif” <a>
Another type of link is a named anchor link. These are used to scroll a web page to a particular location. An anchor link uses a ‘name’ attribute instead of href. For example:
<a name=”myAnchor”>Text goes here<a>. Here the name ‘myAnchor’ is assigned to this particular anchor. This tag is inserted at the location in the document we want to scroll TO. To call this anchor, we create a link somewhere else in the document and give it the anchor name. For instance:
<a href=#myAnchor>This links takes me to the anchor</a>. Here, the link is as described in the bullet above, but instead of a URL for the href we use #anchorName as the argument.
Image tags are used to insert graphics into a web page. The basic tag format looks like this:
<img src=”http://myimagefilepath.gif” alt=”This is descriptive
text”>. There is no closing tag for images. Here we see the image tag and the src attribute set to the URL location of the image. The alt attribute holds text that will appear when the mouse hovers over the image. Much of the time developers leave the alt tag empty, but this is an ideal place to use keywords and up the search engine optimization of the page. 3.
